Over 6 weeks, with 3 hours of tuition each week, we’ll explore more advanced throwing techniques and start pushing what you can create on the wheel. Sessions are available on Saturday mornings or afternoons, giving you the opportunity to work through the course at a pace that allows you to properly practise and develop your skills.
Throughout the course, we’ll cover:
- Collaring and shaping taller forms, including bottles and more challenging vessels
- Throwing larger forms while maintaining control and even wall thickness
- Developing more consistent shapes and sizes
- Creating and fitting lids for jars and vessels
- More advanced surface texturing and decoration
- Throwing and attaching spouts
- Making and attaching handles
- Defining your throwing technique to create cleaner, more controlled forms
- Developing your ability to troubleshoot and correct common throwing problems
The course is focused on helping you move beyond the basics and develop the skills needed to create more ambitious and functional pieces with greater consistency.
Clay, commercial glazes and one full shelf firing are included in the course price. You will be given a shelfs template to know exactly how much space in the kiln you'll have.
The basic week by week plan would go as follows:
Week 1 - Consistency & Control
Throwing consistent cylinders and bowls, controlling wall thickness, improving centring and producing repeatable forms.
Week 2 - Tall Forms
Throwing taller vessels, pulling thinner walls, controlling height and creating necks and shoulders.
Week 3 - Larger Forms
Working with larger amounts of clay, throwing wider forms and developing techniques for managing bigger pieces.
Week 4 - Altered Forms
Faceting, fluting, shaping and altering thrown pieces to create more individual and sculptural forms.
Week 5 - Lidded Forms
Making matching forms, creating lids, galleries and knobs, with a focus on accuracy and fit.
Week 6 - Personal Project
Students design and throw their own piece, putting the techniques from the previous five weeks into practice
